Clarification re 54 Storey Skyscraper proposed for Yonge/Garden

Further to the recent post regarding the 54 Storey Skyscraper proposed for Yonge/Garden, CAG reached out to Ward 5 Councillor Karen Cilevitz to get clarification on the application and to ask if there would be any opportunity for the public to comment.

Councillor Cilevitz said that the most important thing to know is that once an application has been appealed to LPAT they have full and total jurisdiction over the application and any final decision. Having an application before the LPAT tribunal effectively takes Council out of the equation.

She clarified that a Council Public Meeting was held in Council chambers May 8, 2019 where comments from the public were received regarding the original Metroview application for this location, one 20 storey tower and one 13 storey tower. At this meeting, the applicant stated that they would be submitting a revised application. And at that meeting, Councillor Cilevitz remarked that it would be very confusing for residents to comment on one application when another, of obvious greater height and density, was to be submitted.

In March of this year Metroview then submitted the revised application for the proposed 54 storey building and immediately appealed it to LPAT, thus bypassing any further Council comment or public comment before Council.

City planners had re-scheduled another Council Public Meeting for April 1, 2020 to give residents a second opportunity to provide comments, however due to COVID-19 that meeting was cancelled and arrangements had not yet been made to hold Zoom Council Public meetings, only Council meetings. Councillor Cilevitz said that staff did have discussions with her and that they decided not to reschedule it because the revised application did not satisfy the needs to have another statutory public meeting meeting as one had already been held March, 2019.

TAKE ACTION! Councillor Cilevitz encourages residents to stay involved and said residents can request to be heard as a Participant at the upcoming LPAT hearing.
