Regional Councillor charged lawyer fees to Constituency account...What the??

According to the just posted Richmond Hill Council Q2 Expense Reports, Regional Councillor Carmine Perrelli charged a total of $6,107.78 in lawyer fees to his Constituency Account.

It's bad enough that Perrelli attempted to stiff Richmond Hill taxpayers for his $140,000 blue bin event but now we find out that he wants us to pay for his lawyers as well?

This abuse of the public purse has got to stop!

Under the Unallocated Expenses column of Perrelli's Expense report it shows the following charges:

  • April 14, 2021 - Gardiner Roberts LLP - $5,000

  • April 29, 2021 - Virgilio Law - $44.75

  • May 11, 2021 - Gardiner Roberts LLP - $1063.03

Hopefully Councillor Perrelli has been told that these are ineligible expenses and has to reimburse the taxpayers accordingly.

You may recall that back on February 26, 2020 in a motion brought forth by none other than Councillor Perrelli, Council members put themselves in charge of determining the appropriateness of their expenses and the revised policy eliminates Corporate and Financial Services review of all expenses to determine whether they are eligible expenses.

Albeit that the Member of Council Expense Policy states the following:

"The responsibility for determining the appropriateness of expenses rests with the individual Elected Official. The Elected Official is accountable to the public."

It does not open the door to Councillors using their constituency accounts for this type of expenditure.

Lawyer fees are NOT appropriate expenses!

I don’t know of any other organization where the *claimant* gets to decide what are legitimate expenses. That’s why there are finance divisions and firm rules/guidelines. Try telling the CRA your new car or the kid’s clothes are legitimate deductions and see what happens. Let’s get the wheels put back on the Richmond Hill Council’s expense accountability and restore the Corporate and Financial Services oversight unit.
