Richmond Hill Councillor charged with fraudulent use of funds

Investigators with York Regional Police have charged a Richmond Hill Councillor Karen Cilevitz and her spouse following a probe into the fraudulent use of funds.

On Dec. 15 Police arrested Cilevitz and her spouse, who have since been released with a court date, April 1, 2021.

According to police, Ward 5 Coun. Karen Cilevitz hired an additional staff member, then allegedly arranged for the new employee to give a portion of their pay to the councillor’s spouse. It is believed that more than $21,000 was paid to the councillor’s spouse from August 2019 to May 2020, police said.

A police source said a woman who was acting as an assistant initially told the city about the suspected fraudulent use of funds and the city reported it to the regional police.

"Under the Municipal Act, the councillor is permitted to retain her seat at this time," Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow said in a statement.
